The Boiler Upgrade Scheme has changed for the better

The Government announced this week that the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is changing, with the amount for both air source heat pumps and ground source heat pumps is set to increase to £7,500.

This will come into effect from Monday 23 October.

The scheme, designed to help support the Government’s target of achieving 600,000 heat pump installations per year by 2028 has been in place since May 2022.

Why Heat Pumps?

Heat pumps are widely seen as central to meeting the UK’s heating and hot water demands as the country moves towards achieving net zero emissions.

With a number of benefits over oil, gas and direct electric heating systems, heat pumps have already become more common in Europe’s coldest countries.

  • Reduced energy bills: heat pumps are powered by electricity, and thus are not exposed to the same volatile price changes associated with gas and oil. A recent survey found that 59% of gas boiler users are satisfied with their running costs; for heat pump users, this figure jumps to 67%.
  • VAT savings: VAT is currently set at 0% on the installation of heat pumps, meaning costs are lower than ever before.
  • Reduced carbon footprint: heat pumps are zero carbon at the point of use, and are incredibly efficient.
  • Save time and storage space on fuel deliveries: if your property uses oil or LPG, by switching to a heat pump you’ll no longer need to arrange fuel deliveries, and save the space used for storing fuel.

Heat pumps have been the subject of much controversy and negative, press but here’s our take on debunking those myths: HERE
